Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment and will it hurt?

A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that is fixated, "locked up", or not moving properly. This adds motion to the joint, helping the bones gradually return to a more normal position and motion. The purpose of this safe and natural procedure is improved spinal function, improved nervous system function, and improved health.  The adjustment itself is a painless procedure.  You may hear a ‘popping’ sound similar to that heard when opening a can of pop.  This is simply the result of gasses being released within the joints.

Is Chiropractic safe?

Chiropractic adjustments or manipulations are extremely safe. The risk factor is estimated to be in excess of one million to one.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is an ancient healthcare practice that uses a series of predetermined points on the body to activate the body’s built-in pain relieving system to decrease the sensation of pain.

I don’t like needles.  Will acupuncture hurt?

While you may feel a quick sensation of pressure or muscle aching, we strive for painless needle insertions to maximize your comfort.

Are the acupuncture needles sterilized?

We only use sterilized disposable acupuncture needles that are never re-used on a client.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments will vary depending on the condition and individual.  Our goal at the Taunton Chiropractic and Health Centre is to optimize your health in the shortest amount of time, which is part of the reason that we integrate a variety of treatment therapies.  There are no lengthy treatment contracts at our health centre, and you are under no obligation to continue treatment.
We do advocate for the benefits of regular wellness care to minimize future injury, but leave it up the individual to decide their own course of treatment.

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. The goal of naturopathic practice is to treat underlying disorders and to restore normal body function by enhancing the body's own healing abilities.

What types of therapies do Naturopathic Doctors use?

Naturopathic medicine is the art and science of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention using natural therapies including: botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, naturopathic manipulation, Traditional Chinese medicine / acupuncture, and lifestyle counselling.

How long are naturopathic appointments?

The first appointment with a Naturopathic Doctor is about 1½ hours and subsequent appointments will be about ½ hour to 1 hour in length, depending on your specific health concerns and the Naturopathic Doctor you are working with.

What should I expect from my first visit with a Naturopathic Doctor?

Typically during the initial visits your Naturopathic Doctor will take a detailed history of your current and past health concerns, conduct a physical exam and use information from laboratory tests to make an assessment and diagnosis. With the patient's input, a personalized treatment plan will be proposed to help facilitate achieving their health goals.

How often should I see my Naturopath?

This depends on your Naturopathic Doctor’s treatment philosophy, what you are being treated for, the treatment modality being used. Visits can be scheduled  weekly for a certain time period, every two weeks, or as little as once per month.

Will insurance cover my treatment?

Many extended healthcare packages will cover the cost associated with most of our services.  Check with your health insurance provider to see if you and your family are covered.

What is the centre's cancellation policy?

To avoid charges, we require a minimum of 24 hours notice for cancellation.  A 100% cancellation fee will be charged if you cancel your appointment with less than 24 hours notice or if you do not show for your scheduled appointment time.
If your appointment is booked on the same day, please be aware that the cancellation policy will be in effect once your appointment is set.   This is done in fairness both to clients who would otherwise have wanted the appointment and to the therapist, who is not paid if they do not perform the session.
We take pride in the fact that our clients never wait and are never rushed.  As a courtesy to everyone, thank you for being prompt.  Late arrivals can only be extended to the time remaining in the scheduled session.
